Disability.gov Benefits News & Events Update: Social Security Holds Disability Hearing on Compassionate Allowances and Schizophrenia

The Social Security Administration (SSA) hosted a public hearing on Compassionate Allowances for people living with schizophrenia.  SSA heard testimony from some of the nation's leading experts on schizophrenia about possible methods of identifying and implementing Compassionate Allowances for young adults with schizophrenia.  "Schizophrenia is a devastating disease that affects more than two million Americans, primarily individuals in their teens and twenties," said Commissioner Astrue.  "The onset of schizophrenia has life-changing consequences, which can include unemployment and homelessness."

What about the poorest of us on social security disability? We are not going to receive a cost of living adjustment this year. I live on less than 8k a year which means I have to go without food several times a week, while groceries have increased 45% in the last two years and expected to rise another 5% this year. Where is the compassion?

Hi, I'm a 36 year old female who lives with mental illness.I would love to go to your meetings to talk about my illness and how it has avected my life,and my grown up years. I'm on medication and a lot of time I go in/out of the hospital because the medicine stopped working for me.
