 Working title: Research Specialist

 Official title: RESEARCH SPECIALIST(T16DN) or ASSOC RESEARCH SPEC(T16FN)

 Degree and area of specialization:

B.S. required in environmental studies or related field; advanced degree preferred.

 Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

 Experience with scenario planning for environmental assessment, workshop

organization, development and/or deployment of surveys; data management and

analysis; demonstrated personal initiative; ability to work collaboratively

in an interdisciplinary setting; excellent verbal and written communication

skills; background knowledge of human-environment systems. The ideal

candidate would have technical depth and experience in a field related to

environmental assessment. Knowledge of comprehensive environmental scenario

processes (for example IPCC, MEA, EEA, GEO or IAASTD) would be helpful.

 Principal duties:

 The Water, Sustainability and Climate (WSC) research program at the

University of Wisconsin-Madison (http://wsc.limnology.wisc.edu) will develop

integrated scenarios of future changes in the Yahara Watershed, Wisconsin

through 2016. Scenarios will synthesize changes in socio-economic processes,

climate, land use/cover, hydrology, biogeochemistry and ecology that affect

the overall trajectory of the human-environment system, including the

characteristics and quality of the Yahara lakes. Scenarios will be developed

through workshops, data synthesis and modeling that involve project

Principal Investigators (PIs), other relevant experts, stakeholders, policy

makers and the public.

 We seek a Research Specialist to coordinate the scenario development

process. Responsibilities include meeting organization; integration of input

from stakeholders, policy makers and the public; design of scenarios in

collaboration with a scenario development team; collaboration with modelers

and other technical experts to translate storylines into simulation models;

and communication of findings to non-technical and technical audiences.

Other duties include assisting with sustainability research, giving public

presentations, writing for nontechnical and academic audiences, outreach,

and synthesis of multidisciplinary information. The Research Specialist will

work closely with project PIs and other project personnel.

 Additional Information:

 This position will be administered through the Department of Agronomy,

housed at the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,

and co-supervised by project PIs.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.

A twelve month period of evaluation will be required.

This webcast will highlight an emerging issue of nutrient enrichment leading to harmful algal blooms in lakes. The webcast will explain the connection between nutrients and harmful algal blooms such as blue green algae. These algal blooms are causing loss of recreational uses including fishing, swimming and in some cases are resulting in increasing costs for drinking water treatment. The webcast will provide an overview of the issue and will present case studies on Grand Lake St.

Mary's in Ohio and Lake Waco in Texas. This Webcast is a first in a series of Watershed Academy Webcasts on the important issue of nutrients and their impact on water resources.
